Melbourne Assessment Prison

PLEA’s program delivery has been impacted by restrictions in place to address the risks of COVID-19 entering the prison system. This has included the suspension of in-person program delivery in many cases. Information on this page may not reflect current operation.

Melbourne Assessment Prison (MAP) is the city’s most central prison, lying to the north of Southern Cross Station. Because of its nature as a remand prison, MAP has a highly transient population which PLEA responds to by focusing our sessions on court readiness.

Sessions at MAP are run twice a week, allowing inmates to come into contact with PLEA before they are transferred to more permanent prisons. These sessions cover topics such as lawyers, preparing for court, trial processes and sentencing. In particular, presenters cover court etiquette and ways the men can assist their lawyers in preparing, which is particularly helpful for inmates who are new to the system and unsure of what to expect.
